Dear Lakeview Families,

On behalf of the entire Lakeview Elementary PTA Leadership Team, I want to reassure you that now more than ever we are locking arms with administration and teachers to make sure we continue to support our Lakeview community during this challenging time. One of our goals for this year has been to focus on how we can further build community among our families and to support students and teachers in the classrooms. We hope you have been able to see this woven into all of our activities and events. This period of time will be no different.

If there ever was a time to fully embrace and appreciate the importance of a partnership between parents and teachers, this is it. In the blink of an eye, parents who are used to reveling in a few minutes of solitude after sending their children to school for 7 hours each day suddenly find themselves overwhelmed with social distancing, assignments, additional meal preparation and cleaning, in addition to working from home. Teachers who are used to the excitement of greeting students upon arrival and having classrooms filled with our children find themselves at home without their students and have been catapulted into the world of online instruction. Students are tearfully missing their friends and teachers and are having to adjust to parents serving in the capacity of being their “teacher” at home.

Moving Forward

As our PTA has had to cancel beloved events and will be faced with the uncertainty of what the next few months may bring, we are compelled to finish up PTA business for the 2019-2020 school year and set up the 2020-2021 Executive Board to continue our mission successfully into the next school year. None of this is “normal” for any of us, but I think we can all agree that supporting students and teachers in instruction and learning is our #1 priority.

“Technology will never replace great teachers,
but in the hands of great teachers,
it’s transformational.”

– George Couros

Online Subscriptions:
For the last three years, Lakeview Elementary PTA has been able to provide key online learning subscriptions that have become fundamental to providing students with continuity of education through this transition from the classroom to distance learning. Whether your student uses RAZ Kids, Pebble Go, or No Red Ink, they are directly impacted by your support of Lakeview Elementary PTA. This year, Mrs. Oster was able to add another key instructional platform called Education Galaxy.

These four subscriptions come to Lakeview at a cost of right under $14,000 per year or approximately $25/student per year. Our PTA fundraising efforts this year, have allowed our organization to continue providing every student with these vital resources. As we approach subscription renewals coming due within the next few months, your PTA continues to take very seriously the role of being good stewards of the funds we raise and how we use it to serve our community. Our Lakeview family has proven extremely generous over many years. However, we are now all facing uncertainty in unprecedented times, and none of us have a clear picture of what’s ahead and how long it will take for things to turn around…especially on the financial horizon.

In the spirit of being VERY conservative and making sure the school has what it needs for the foreseeable future, we are looking into possible discounts if we renew these subscriptions for two years rather than just one. This would allow us to secure these valuable resources that our teachers and students use daily through the 2021-2022 academic year. We appreciate your support as we pursue this opportunity to continue to enhance Lakeview's distance learning program.

Financial Stewardship

Cancelled Events, Socials and Front Row Seats:
Many of you purchased tickets to the Mother/Son Date Night, as well as, auction items at the Wild About the 80’s party, such as socials, teacher tuck-ins, and front row seats to Kinder and 5th-grade graduations. The Executive Board held our regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, April 6, 2020, and decided that the Mother/Son Date Night will not be rescheduled this year. (Although, we did discuss the possibility of having a Lakeview Mother/Son Nerf War night over the summer at The Battlefield.)  It is our goal to reschedule the socials and teacher tuck-ins for later in the year. Kinder and 5th-grade graduation ceremonies will be determined at the District level. Again, a lot of unknowns.

We would be SO grateful if you are able to consider any purchases made for any of these items or events as a donation to Lakeview whether we are able to fulfill them or not. If you are able to donate the purchase amount to Lakeview PTA, you do not need to do anything, and we will send out a donation email to you. Once we are able to hold and/or reschedule events, we will happily honor the value of your purchase. However, none of us on the Lakeview Elementary PTA Executive Board would ever make any presumptions about someone’s financial position and understand that some may not have the ability to do that at this time. If this is the case, please let us know by sending your refund request to lakeviewbobcatspta@gmail.com. We kindly ask you not to contact your credit card company for a reversal. We will process refunds as soon as possible. We sincerely hope that we can count on your support.

Refocused Spending:
Our Spending Committee recently suggested shifting the purchase of the shade structure to the future since the proposed District bond has money set aside for playgrounds. At this point, the PTA Board believes it's important to make sure we don’t spend money on something that might not fit into the District’s plan. Additionally, we have volunteers who have offered to investigate grant options that may subsidize the cost of the shade structures. Because anything dealing with playgrounds requires so much money, the Board agreed it is better to address the playground as one complete project rather than piecing things together.

Upcoming PTA Business:

 Elections:

The month of April is usually the month where we elect the PTA Executive Board officers for the next year. Our Council President has been keeping us updated on guidance from Texas and National PTA. At this time, we are not able to hold elections electronically.

Many thanks to the Lakeview Elementary PTA Nominating Committee for putting forth the proposed slate for your 2020-2021 Executive Board:

President:  Kim Brown

VP of Membership- Carrie Kuhn

VP of Programs - Hilary Holcomb

VP of Fundraising- Lyndsey Bourne

Treasurer- Robin Collins

Secretary- Michaela Sims

Should school resume on May 4, 2020, then we plan on holding elections at the next Membership meeting on Tuesday, May 12, 2020. If school does not resume on that date, we are waiting for instructions on how to proceed.

2020-2021 Memberships:

PTA memberships for the coming school year 2020-2021 will open at the end of April. Your family’s memberships are an easy way to financially support the PTA’s mission and Lakeview’s teachers and staff. More details, including membership levels and benefits will be released closer to the end of the month.

Business to Wrap Up:

Wild About the 80’s Auction item pickup:

If you still had items to pick up from the auction, please reach out to Lyndsey Bourne at lakeviewbobcatspta@gmail.com to make pickup arrangements. Lyndsey will also be sending out an email so be on the lookout for this if you still need to pick up items.

Yearbooks:

A HUGE shout out to Jessica Wood and Kim Brown for the AMAZING work they did on putting together this year’s yearbook. You will be happy to know that the 2019-2020 yearbook was submitted for publication on March 22, 2020. Stay tuned for yearbook distribution plans which will be determined if and when student return to campus. There are still a few yearbooks available for purchase. >Click here. Our school number is 10824.
