Forty years ago, Lakeview Elementary welcomed its first students on campus with 495 students enrolled in grades K-6, a total of 20 classrooms. Opening in 1983, Lakeview is Northwest ISD’s oldest-standing original campus with renovations/additions taking place in 1991, 2003 and 2013.

To mark the milestone occasion, teachers wore “40 Edition” sashes at Convocation to kick off the current school year. In September, Lakeview PTA families gathered to decorate a “40 Years in Paradise” float for the Byron Nelson Homecoming Parade. Meanwhile, Lakeview Elementary teachers who served during the early years followed behind on golf carts to share in the community celebration of Bobcats young and old. There are plans to celebrate throughout the entire school year.

“Lakeview is a little slice of heaven because of our community,” said Mrs. Vicky Hardy, Principal of Lakeview from 1996-2007. Hardy shared how the rapid growth of Trophy Club effected Lakeview and how teachers and families were remarkably adaptable.

Initially, Lakeview hosted grades K-6 until the mid-80’s when it switched to grades K-3. Then, in 1992 when Roanoke Elementary opened, both campuses hosted grades K-5.  Grade levels shifted again in the early 2000s until the district was able to open additional schools to accommodate the tremendous growth in our area. At first the Little Texans, Lakeview’s mascot changed to the Bobcats in 2009 with the opening of Byron Nelson High School, in alignment with Lakeview’s new feeder pattern.

“It's been fun looking through the archives stored here on our campus”, said Mrs. Jodi DeBerry, Lakeview Elementary Office Manager. “We have scrap books with class photos all the way back to the 80’s. The best part is finding photos of teachers and students that are still at Lakeview!” According to DeBerry, there are 3 staff that started teaching at Lakeview in the 1980’s/90’s – Mrs. Kim Mauk (1984), Mrs. Julie Peters (1996) and Mrs. Kim Scott (1999). Two former students, Mrs. Morgan Keller and Ms. Camille Carlisle are also now on staff.

Mrs. Morgan Keller, current Lakeview Music Teacher and a Lakeview student during the early 2000’s, fondly remembers old traditions like the Halloween Sing-a-long and Veteran’s Day Program that music teacher Mrs. Patty Lewis coordinated each year. “When I first started teaching my students the school song, I teared up because it is so near and dear to my heart, said Keller. Dr. Sharon Lehman wrote the score for “Lakeview Kids,” that continues to be the heart of every student that graduates from the school.

“We actually have a number of families in town where the parents are Lakeview alumni and we now have their children in class,” said Mrs. Mauk, current 2nd grade teacher. Mauk started her career in education back in 1983 as a Northwest ISD Librarian, then took a fulltime teaching position at Lakeview the following year.  “While the building has evolved to accommodate the needs of the community, there are some things that never change,” expressed Mauk. “Kids come first. We engage a love of learning.”

Mrs. Erika Oster, current Principal at Lakeview, shared, “When I walk into Lakeview, it immediately feels like home. The relationship we have built with our families and community, the long-standing traditions, and the bond between our staff and students is what makes Lakeview so special.”

Teaching careers run in the Oster family. Mrs. JoAnn Oster started teaching Kindergarten at Lakeview in 1989, then transferred to Roanoke Elementary when it opened.  Both her children and grandchildren attended NISD schools and now her Daughter-in-Law, Erika Oster, is Principal at Lakeview.  “I am proud our family passion to educate has really come full circle in NISD.”

The Lakeview PTA recently coordinated a roundtable of 10 teachers and staff that shared many fond memories of their time at Lakeview. “It's no doubt that the early days of Lakeview, set up traditions and expectations that would be carried throughout all these years,” said Jen Eldridge, Lakeview PTA President. “The campus remains a little gem in Trophy Club.”
